About the event
oin the African American Policy Forum (AAPF) and the #SayHerName Mothers Network at the Sixth Floor Loft (873 Broadway) in New York City on December 14th at 7:00 PM ET for a commemorative gathering on the occasion of #SayHerName’s 9th anniversary.
This year’s anniversary celebrates the release of #SayHerName: Black Women’s Stories of Police Violence and Public Silence. Co-authored by Kimberlé Crenshaw and the African American Policy Forum, #SayHerName provides an analytical framework for readers to understand Black women's susceptibility to police brutality and state-sanctioned violence, and explains how—through Black feminist storytelling and ritual—we can effectively mobilize various communities and empower them to advocate for racial justice. This book is the culmination of the movement’s tenet to bear witness and represents the collective stories of Black women, girls, and femmes who have been victims of state sanctioned violence and the families they leave behind.
Building on the multiple stops of the #SayHerName book tour, the evening will comprise readings of excerpts of the book, which venerate the voices of the #SayHerName Mothers Network that forms the backbone of the publication. The event will also include our signature ritual of remembrance and eclectic performances to uplift the central ways that artivism has propelled and defined the #SayHerName movement. Additionally, the program will feature conversations with Kimberlé Crenshaw and various advocacy stakeholders. These conversations will explore how individuals can actively contribute to the movement and collaborate to build community power toward ending police violence.
Following that, the event will conclude with a reception, an interactive advocacy-based installation, and a book signing session featuring Kimberlé Crenshaw and members of the #SayHerName Mothers Network. All in-person attendees will receive a discounted copy of the book.
