Speaker:
Walter L. Smith, II is a powerhouse of environmental justice, scholarly history, and community resilience in Tampa, Florida. As an environmental engineer and the Lead Organizer for the Sierra Club’s Beyond Coal Campaign, he stands at the forefront of Florida’s transition to clean energy, advocating for the protection of vulnerable populations from industrial hazards.
Born into a legacy of activism, he is the son of the late Dr. Walter L. Smith, Sr., former FAMU President, and Jeraldine Williams, a pioneering journalist and civil rights attorney. A true polymath, Smith is a graduate of Florida A&M University with a B.S. in Civil Engineering, and holds a Master of Public Health from Everglades University and a Master of Arts in Africana Studies from the University of South Florida. His global expertise includes studying Mining Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa, where he assisted his father in establishing Funda Community College in Soweto.
